Emoji were invented by Shigetaka Kurita in 1999 for NTT DoCoMo's mobile internet service in Japan. The original set of 176 icons was designed in 12x12 pixels. Today, the Unicode Standard recognizes over 3,600 emoji. The New York Museum of Modern Art added the original 176 emoji set to its permanent collection in 2016 as a design artifact.
